JEFFERSON COUNTY, TX (08/14/2017) — An 18-year-old Nederland woman was killed on Monday night after her vehicle was struck by an 18-wheeler truck.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the fatal accident occurred on Interstate 10 (near the Hamshire Road exit) at approximately 10:30 p.m. Monday evening.
DPS reports that 18-year-old Destiny Burk (of Nederland, TX) was in a 2000 Lexus passenger vehicle, stopped in the outside traffic lane of eastbound I-10, when the driver of an eastbound 2012 Volvo semi-truck collided with the Lexus and struck a construction barrier before finally coming to a rest.
Tragically, Burk was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash by Justice of the Peace Ray Chesson. The driver of the truck, 29-year-old Vince Ruiz III (of Las Vegas, NV) was reportedly uninjured.
Ruiz told investigators that he “did not see the stopped vehicle in the roadway” prior to the accident. DPS Troopers are still investigating the crash and examining all the evidence, but have not yet said whether or not the truck driver will face criminal charges.
