MOUNT PLEASANT, TX (03/23/2018) — A Friday morning accident on I-30 has claimed the lives of five people, including three children under the age of 10.
The accident occurred at around 8:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 30 (near Talco Road / N. Jefferson Ave).
According to reports, traffic on I-30 was stopped due to a previous (unrelated) wreck, when the driver of an eastbound 18-wheeler failed to control their speed and slammed into the back of a stationary minivan carrying a family of five. The impact was so strong that the minivan was forced into the rear of another semi truck.
The Mt. Pleasant Police Department confirmed that five people have died as a result, including three children inside the minivan (two girls and a boy, all under the age of 10), their mother (a passenger in the van), and a female truck driver from Tennessee.
The father of the children (who was driving the minivan) was transported via air ambulance to Christus Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler. At least four additional people were also injured and transported to Titus Regional Medical Center.
