MIDLAND, TX (08/04/2017) — One person is dead and four others have been hospitalized following a serious car crash near the entrance of the “Rock The Desert” music festival in Midland County, Texas.
According to the Midland Police Department, the two-vehicle accident occurred at 6:49 p.m. on FM 1788 (N. State Highway 349). Police say that a 2001 Subaru Outback with five occupants was stopped in the inside lane of FM 1788, waiting to turn left across southbound traffic into the music festival grounds, when the vehicle was rear-ended at speed by a 2015 Dodge Ram pickup truck.
According to one witness, all five people in the Outback appeared to be unconscious following the collision, and that three people were trapped in the back seats.
19-year-old Hannah Fox, the rear center passenger in the Subaru, was tragically killed in the crash. The driver and three other passengers were reportedly transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Commentary
Unfortunately, this is a tragedy that was completely avoidable. According to reports, police say the driver of the pickup truck “did not realize the Subaru was stopped” before slamming into the vehicle, even though there are no line-of-sight issues on that stretch of FM/RM 1788.
What’s troubling is the fact that no charges have yet been filed against the driver who negligently caused this crash. It’s important to note, however, that police are still conducting their investigation. We’ll continue to update this story as more information is released.
