LAMESA, TX (08/28/2017) — One man has died following a car accident on State Highway 137 Monday night in Dawson County.
23-year-old Rolando Galvan (of Lamesa) was killed in a two-vehicle accident in the northbound lanes of Highway 137. The fatal accident occured on Monday night at around 9:45 p.m., just five miles south of Lamesa, Texas.
According to the Department of Public Safety, Rolando Galvan was driving a 2008 Ford F-150 northbound on SH 137 when the driver of a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu tried to pass in a no-passing zone. As oncoming traffic approached, the driver of the Malibu swerved back toward the northbound lane but ended up clipping the rear of the F-150 pickup truck, causing a crash which led to Galvan’s death. The driver of the Malibu was reportedly uninjured.
The accident currently remains under investigation.
Commentary
DPS reported that Galvan was not wearing a seat belt. While this may have contributed to the severity of his injuries, the collision (as reported) appears to be the direct result of negligence on behalf of the other driver.
While Galvan’s family likely has a valid wrongful death claim against the driver of the Malibu, it will be interesting to see if he or she will also face criminal charges as a result of this tragic crash. We will update this page as more information is released.
