**** UPDATE 3/6/12 *****
The family of 5-year-old Khyla Hayes, who was killed in a hit-and-run on Sunday, is asking the police to increase the charges against driver Daniel McDonald from of failure to render aid to murder and attempted murder.
McDonald drove his SUV into a group of children crossing the street. Khyla was killed and her 6-year-old cousin nearly lost his life. McDonald is already being held for failure to render aid, but is it enough? “I have a lot of anger. I have a lot of hate for that man,” said Khyla’s mother Keisha Williams to WFAA news.
It’s not just about punishment – it’s about the safety of children in the future. That may mean making changes to the street where Khyla died. Williams said, “I want speed bumps, a yield sign or a walkway.”
It’s not just about Fort Worth, it’s a major safety problem in the community at large. Yesterday alone two separate middle schoolers walking to school were hit by drivers in Garland and Lewisville. Thankfully, both survived with non-life threatening injuries. It is clear, however, that we could all do a better job in ensuring the safety of the children in our communities.
