Two weeks ago, we were all stunned by news of a speeding 18-wheeler that fell sideways on top of another car on the North Dallas Tollway. The driver of the smaller car was knocked out and trapped in his car. It wasn’t looking good for Greg Meece – he was in pain, he couldn’t move his arms, fuel was pooling around his car and he was stuck.

Thankfully, good Samaritans came to his rescue instantly. It took several men to pry the door of his car open and to get him out of the vehicle. Meece’s wife Donna Meece told reporters, “If they ever had the question that they saved his life — they did.” One of the responders was a nurse who ran barefoot, heels in hand, to his aid. She wisely took precautions with his neck and spine until an ambulance could arrive. “That’s one of a series of events that not only saved my life, but it’s going to allow me to walk again,” said Meece.
Even with all their help, doctors at Parkland Hospital weren’t sure that the lucky survivor would ever be mobile again. Meece had an emergency surgery that used one of his ribs to correct the spinal damage in his neck. At this point, the story could have taken a darker turn – but Meece was in capable hands again.

Meece reflected, “Prior to the accident, nothing went right. From the moment of the accident forward, nothing has gone wrong so I almost have to say that every day has been a highlight because of the people I have met.”
The surgery was successful, and Meece is undergoing rehabilitation at Zale-Lipshy hospital. He’s scheduled to be released tomorrow – alive, walking and grateful for every moment.
