When Maria Vasquez was killed last Sunday in a drunk-driving wreck on I-35 it sent shock waves through her loved ones. Maria left behind a son, three-year-old Johnny Vasquez. He was dropped off at his grandparents’ house before the car accident. She is also survived by a sister and her parents.
Maria had just turned thirty-three and had moved in with her fiancé Jorkey Ray. Her fiancé tried to express his intense grief to the news media who interviewed him yesterday, “It was like my world stopped for me right now. She was everything to me.”
The intoxicated driver who caused the accident, Santiago Gonzalez, has been charged with Vasquez’s death and is being held by immigration. Maria’s family reminds us all that Gonzalez did not simply drive drunk he killed a wife, a mother, and a sister.
