Jose Sepulveda is back with his family after he nearly lost his life in the June 29 Dallas North Tollway crash when a DART van sped straight into his stopped vehicle. Sepulveda remembers the moments right before the impact when he saw the DART van in his rear view mirror as it sped towards him without braking. He told reporters, “I remember seeing him 10 feet away. It was the worst feeling.” Sepulveda closed his eyes and gripped the steering wheel. When firefighters were able to pull him out of what was left of his car it was clear that Sepulveda’s injuries were extremely serious.
He was in the hospital for more than three weeks with extensive injuries including – a broken hip, arm, leg, and 11 ribs. Sepulveda made an unbelievable recovery. The 28-year-old father and husband is happy to be home. He still has a long road to go when it comes to medical recovery. He will need months of more surgeries, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy and cognitive therapy to get back to where he once was. He will have the support of his wife, two children and his mother as he works to become healthier. His wife, Pollieanna, is a nurse herself and told WFAA, “It’s a long road, but we are going to make it together as a family.”
In addition to his courage and resilience, Sepulveda has also shown an impressive emotional calm when discussing the accident. He has expressed how grateful he feels to have made a recovery. He told reporters, “It doesn’t serve a purpose to be angry at anyone. I mean, I got a second chance at life.”
