Earlier this month a man in a scooter was run over by a car that failed to stop at the scene of the accident. Sadly, yesterday afternoon the man in the scooter passed away as a result of his injuries. The victim has been identified as 64-year-old James Victor Hawley.
Hawley was crossing Collins Street near the Quick Trip on Division Street in Arlington. The accident occurred at half-past-one in the morning on Monday, January 14th. The police have not been able to apprehend the hit-and-run driver. The investigation is on-going. The vehicle is described as a metallic blue General Motors sedan possibly a 2006-2010 Chevy Impala. Investigators believe the driver’s side mirror may be missing.

Doing the Right Thing: Plano Driver Stops After Accident

The criminal element of the Arlington accident was the decision that the driver made to flee the scene. In Plano a pedestrian was killed earlier this morning when a middle-aged white male tried to cross Highway 75 in Plano not far from Park Boulevard. In this case, the pedestrian was struck by a driver who was merging onto the highway. The North Texan driver stopped and called the police straightaway. While she was reportedly “distraught” as anyone in that situation would be, she did the right thing by staying at the scene and notifying police.
The investigation has not been completed in the Plano accident, but it’s possible that the driver who hit the pedestrian could be cleared of all wrongdoing (if the pedestrian was jay-walking.) The driver in the Arlington accident may or may not have been able to avoid hitting the man in the scooter. Visibility may have been bad that late at night. However, those mitigating circumstances become far less relevant when a driver decides to leave the scene of an accident – that one action is in and of itself a crime.
