Rowlett / Rockwall / Garland, Texas — Six people have been taken to Baylor Medical Center following an early Friday morning (01/10.2014) car accident on the Interstate 30 bridge over Lake Ray Hubbard.
The crash occurred at around 3:30 a.m. near Dalrock Road, and involved six 18-wheeler trucks and at least seven cars. There are some reports of a possible 8th car involved which may have gone over the guardrail and into the lake. Rescue crews are searching the water, and describe the search as “precautionary.” At least three of victims taken to the hospital suffered non-life-threatening injuries, including one with a broken leg. The status of the other three were not immediately available. More injuries may be reported later.
23-year-old Christopher Anthony Sosa has been arrested and charged with intoxication assault following the accident. The National Weather Service had issued a dense fog advisory for the area through 9:00 a.m. CST Friday, likely making visibility a factor as well. As a result of the closed roads and subsequent traffic, a second crash involving a big rig truck then forced the closure of I-30 near FM 548 in Royse City, TX.
The pileup caused damage to about 500 feet of concrete barriers, and spilled fuel onto the roadway. Both directions of Interstate 30 are expected to be close until at least Friday afternoon while crews clean up and repair the accident site. Even when I-30 reopens, the center lanes may stay closed while the damaged concrete medians are being replaced.
