FORT WORTH, TX (12/23/2014) — A wrong-way driver on I-30 caused a fatal car accident Tuesday night which claimed the lives of Sabrina Fernandez, her unborn child, and the wrong-way driver.
According to police, a female was driving a Dodge sedan eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 30 when she crashed head-on into an Infiniti sedan near the Beach Street exit (between Oakland Blvd and Beach Street). Police responded to the accident at 10:36 p.m.
The wrong-way driver died at the scene of the accident. There were no passengers in her vehicle. All occupants of the Infiniti were taken to John Peter Smith Hospital. The driver, 18-year-old Sabrina Fernandez (of Grand Prairie) was pronounced dead at 11:46 p.m. Tuesday night. Her unborn daughter also passed away at 11:35 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s website. Fernandez’ two passengers, a 17-year-old male and a 28-year-old female, remain hospitalized in critical condition at John Peter Smith Hospital.
According to police Capt. Scott Conn, nothing at the scene indicated that the wrong-way driver was intoxicated. Police say that the traffic investigation unit will conduct a more extensive investigation and try to determine why she was driving the wrong way.
