GARLAND, TX (05/16/2015) — Crystal Nuncio, 28, was killed in a wrong way head-collision on Saturday morning on I-635 near Jupiter road; her two children were also seriously injured in the crash.
According to police, 28-year-old Crystal Nuncio—a 9-year veteran dispatcher for the Garland Police Department—was killed in a wrong way crash on Saturday morning just after 5:00 a.m. on westbound Interstate 635 near Jupiter Road. Police say a drunk driver is responsible for causing the fatal accident.
Melinda Gutierrez, a department spokeswoman, stated that just two minutes before the crash, Dallas police received two 911 calls about a blue Chevy Tahoe traveling the wrong way on I-635. Luis Angel Rodriguez, 25, was the driver of the Tahoe, which slammed into Nuncio’s white Chevy HHR station wagon; Nuncio was killed instantly.
Authorities stated that Nuncio’s two children, 10-year-old daughter, Ally; and 9-month old son, Peyton; were both transported to Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. Ally was reported to be in critical condition, and Peyton was reportedly stable.
Randy Sachs, a Children’s hospital spokesman, declined to give an update about the children on Sunday, citing a request by the family.
Police have reported that Rodriguez was intoxicated at the time. He was taken to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition, however, his current condition is unknown.
Raul Reyna, a spokesman for the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department, said that while Rodriguez was in the hospital, he was booked as a Dallas County prisoner. Jail records indicate that Rodriguez has been charged with one count of vehicular intoxication manslaughter and two counts of reckless injury to a child causing serious bodily injury.
Update 05/20/2015:
CBS DFW has reported that, according to family friends, 9-month-old Peyton suffered a broken leg, but is out of the hospital. 10-year-old Ally is said to have suffered multiple broken bones and several fractures. She remains in a medically-induced coma. The suspected of drunk driver is still in the hospital in critical condition.
