MOUNT PLEASANT, TX (06/07/2015) — Siblings Manuel DeJesus Diaz, 19, and Maria Gonzalez, 33, were killed in a car fire after an accident on FM 899 in Mount Pleasant, Texas early Sunday morning.
According to reports, 19-year-old Manuel DeJesus Diaz and 33-year-old Maria Gonzalez were killed in a single vehicle accident early Sunday morning, just before 1:00 a.m., in the 2200 block of West 1st Street (FM 899) in Mount Pleasant, Texas.
Police state that Diaz was traveling eastbound on West 1st Street in a 2007 Kia when the vehicle left the roadway and hit several trees. A spark caused by the crash engulfed the vehicle in flames.
According to witnesses, Diaz and Gonzalez were seen trapped inside the Kia; however, due to the intensity of the flames, witnesses were unable to get them out.
Justice of the Peace Kay McNutt pronounced both victims dead at the scene at 3:41 a.m.
At this time Mount Pleasant police continue to investigate this crash; the cause of the incident has yet to be determined.
