KIRBYVILLE, TX (06/24/2015) — A Wednesday afternoon car accident claimed the lives of Ethel Lorenz, 74, and an 8-year-old child, and also injured Dennis Williams, Fred Jones, 32, Grady Jones, 74, and a 9-year-old girl.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), 74-year-old Ethel Lorenz and an 8-year-old child were both killed in a rollover crash off U.S. 96 and County Road 601 in Jasper County, Texas, near Kirbyville, on Wednesday afternoon.
Troopers state that around 4:15 p.m., a Honda Civic, driven by Lorenz, was traveling northbound on U.S. 96 when she turned left into a crossover.
Police believe that at the other end of the crossover, Lorenz failed to yield to southbound traffic and the Civic was struck by a Toyota Tundra (towing a trailer) being driven by Dennis Williams.
The Tundra struck the Civic on the passenger side, and the collision caused both vehicles to rollover and land in a nearby field.
Lorenz and the 8-year-old child died at the scene; Lorenz’s second passenger, a 9-year-old girl, was flown via medical helicopter (CareFlite) to Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston with unknown injuries.
Williams, and his two passengers—Fred Jones, 32, and Grady Jones, 74, both of Port Arthur—were transported via ambulance to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont, Texas. The extent of their injuries are not known at this time.
This fatal crash remains under investigation by the DPS.
