SHERMAN, TX (10/09/2015) — A reckless driver caused a head-on accident on Friday night, which seriously injured Grayson Co. Commissioner Bart Lawrence.
According to authorities, 60-year-old Bart Lawrence was seriously injured, and 41-year-old Shawn Velie was killed, following a wrong way accident on Friday night.
This accident occurred along Highway 289 near Plainview Road in Sherman, Texas.
State Trooper Mark Tackett stated that at around 5:00 p.m., Velie was traveling southbound on Highway 289 at a high rate of speed when he attempted to pass another vehicle and collided with Lawrence’s Ford Expedition head-on.
“It was an erratic driver who was trying to pass several vehicles and did not have enough room for the pass. He hit a car head-on and caused a collision,” Tackett said.
Police reported that Velie was transported to Texoma Medical Center, where he later died.
Lawrence was airlifted to the Medical Center of Plano with serious trauma to his leg and possible internal injuries.

An estimated 90 percent of roadway accidents can be attributed to some type of reckless driving: speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, and even failing to signal while changing lanes.
