HOUSTON, TX (10/19/2015) — An elderly woman crashed into a grocery store on Monday, which killed Carla Sanchez and injured six others.
According to authorities, 31-year-old Carla Sanchez died on Monday after a 74-year-old woman crashed her Saturn SUV into an H-E-B grocery store located at 3111 Woodridge Drive in Houston, Texas.
Police stated at around 1:40 p.m., a 74-year-old woman was pulling out of a handicapped parking spot when she accelerated, barreled through a concrete barrier, and crashed into the store hitting several checkout lanes.
“She then put the car in reverse and for unknown reasons accelerated rapidly,” Houston Police Department spokesman Kese Smith said.
Sanchez was struck and killed; however, she managed to save her two-year-old toddler.
“She pushed her little girl out the way. She avoided the car getting to the little girl,” said HEB cashier Yuditth Garcia.
The elderly female driver injured a total of six people: four customers and two employees. The victims were taken to nearby area hospitals for treatment of injuries ranging from scrapes and cuts to broken bones.
“Any time an incident like this occurs within our community, we are deeply saddened,” H-E-B public affairs representative Cyndy Garza Roberts said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and family members during this difficult time. We will continue to work with HPD as their investigation continues.”
The Houston Police Department continues to investigate this accident.
