DENISON, TX (11/14/2015) — Mark Marcum was hospitalized on Saturday after his riding lawnmower was struck by a drunk driver.
Denison police are investigating an accident that left 37-year-old Mark Marcum hospitalized after he was struck by a drunk driver while mowing his lawn on Saturday afternoon in Denison, Texas.
According to Denison police, 38-year-old Johnnie Metcalf was speeding down Shepard Street at around 2:30 p.m. when he collided with Marcum’s riding lawn mower.
“It look like he got hit from the back so if he wasn’t on a lawnmower he probably woulda been ran over all the way and it probably woulda killed him,” said Cody Scott, a nearby witness who watched the accident unfold.
Metcalf fled the scene, but was arrested a short time later. He has been charged with intoxication assault causing serious bodily injury, accident involving injury, and driving while intoxicated.
Marcum was taken to Texoma Medical Center in Denison for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Sarah Spark Duran, Marcum’s neighbor, stated that this accident has changed her mind about allowing her children to walk home alone after school.
“Instead of sitting and watching for them to come from the house I’ll probably be waiting in the park for them because it does make me worried, because cars come by faster than they should be especially in residential neighborhoods,” Duran said.
