LAMESA, TX (11/24/2015) — A driver who ran a stop sign caused an accident that killed Lauren Hawthorne, and injured Andrew Aldrich, Cristy Reams, and two children last Tuesday.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), a two-vehicle accident in Lamesa, Texas killed 26-year-old Lauren Hawthorne, and left five people injured: 26-year-old Trent Hawthorne, 27-year-old Andrew Aldrich, 35-year-old Cristy Reams, and two children—ages 4 and 8.
DPS reported that on Tuesday, Trent Hawthorne was traveling southbound along Highway 87 in a 2009 Toyota Corolla when he ran a stop sign and broadsided a 2010 Dodge Ram, driven by Aldrich, who was traveling westbound along Highway 180.
Lauren Hawthorne lost her life in the wreckage.
Aldrich and his passengers—the two children and Reams—were injured. However, Reams remains in serious condition. The remaining occupants of the Dodge Ram have been listed in stable condition at Medical Arts Hospital.
Trent Hawthorne remains in critical condition.
Commentary
Nearly 700,000 accidents annually are attributed to drivers who run stop signs, and many of those accidents result in serious injuries. Was this accident preventable? From early reports, it sure appears so.
