LUBBOCK, TX (01/11/2016) — Deputy Ryan Burns remains hospitalized in critical condition following a two-vehicle accident on Monday involving a potential drunk driver.
According to police, 23-year-old Deputy Ryan Burns—with the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office—was seriously injured after a suspected drunk driver struck his patrol vehicle at 8900 Milwaukee Avenue in Lubbock, Texas.
Authorities reported that at around 6:45 p.m., 51-year-old Richard Bradley was traveling northbound in a 2011 Chevrolet pickup truck when he failed to yield the right of way as he attempted to turn left. Bradley struck Burns’ patrol car, forcing the cruiser into a utility pole.
After the incident, Bradley fled the scene on foot, but was later captured.
Burns was transported to University Medical Center (UMC) via EMS. Eric Finley with UMC stated that Burns is in critical condition as of Tuesday morning.
“(Bradley) is being charged with failure to stop and render aid, failure to report accident, failure to leave information and failure to yield right of way,” according to a statement released by the Lubbock Police Department.
According to sheriff’s records, Bradley’s bond is set at $11,000.
Lt. Ray Mendoza suspects that Bradley may have been drinking before he drove, however, since he wasn’t found until two and half hours after the collision, Bradley could have had time to sober up.
Lubbock Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Bryan Taylor stated that no further details will be released concerning Deputy Burns.
