DENTON, TX (05/02/2016) — Christina Cashion and her daughter Jakayla were seriously injured after a suspected drunk driver struck their vehicle on Monday night.
News outlets have released the names of two of the victims who were seriously injured following a head-on collision along Loop 288 and Kings Row in Denton, Texas as: 31-year-old Christina Cashion and her 7-year-old daughter Jakayla.
According to Denton police, at around 9:44 p.m., the 60-year-old driver of a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling northbound when he crossed into southbound traffic and collided with Cashion’s 2016 Mazda SUV head-on.
After the initial collision, the Malibu was broadsided by a third vehicle.
Four people were involved in the three-vehicle crash, and were transported to Denton Regional Medical Center. Jakayla, who sustained life-threatening injuries, was later taken to Cook Children’s Medical Center where she remains in critical condition.
Authorities stated that Cashion suffered injuries that included a broken wrist, broken tailbone, broken femur, partially collapsed lung, and extensive bruising throughout her entire body.
“I’m scared for my daughter and scared for myself,” said Cashion. “As compared to her, I am much better than she is. She is not doing good at all.”
Jakayla underwent surgery to repair the damage to her intestines. An MRI is pending to determine the possibility of paralysis.
“She’s in and out of consciousness,” Cashion said. “She can’t even talk. There are tubes in her throat, a neck brace, tubes in her chest. Both sides of her pelvis were broken.”
The current conditions of the other two victims are unknown at this time.
Investigators believe that alcohol was a factor in this accident.
Commentary
If the driver who caused this accident is found to have been intoxicated at the time of the crash, he or she could face enhanced criminal charges of intoxication assault in addition to any civil lawsuits brought by the victims. This negligent driver’s actions have drastically affected the lives of three innocent people, one of whom is currently fighting for her life, simply because (as investigator believe) they couldn’t wait to drive home sober.
We hope this accident is thoroughly investigated, and offer our deepest condolences to those affected.
