WEBSTER, TX (09/05/2016) — DPS Trooper Chad Blackburn remains hospitalized following a rear-end collision on Monday.
According to officials, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Trooper Chad Blackburn suffered serious injuries after a drunk driver struck his patrol vehicle at the intersection of Interstate 45 near NASA Road 1 in Webster, Texas.
Authorities stated that at around 1:45 a.m., 31-year-old Tuwanna Moore was driving a red Mercedes-Benz when she rear-ended Trooper Blackburn’s vehicle, which was parked on the shoulder of the road, patrolling for the Labor Day holiday.
“The preliminary tox[icology] screen that was taken was .29,” a court officer read. “She admitted to the filing officer she consumed tequila. She also admitted to driving.”
Trooper Blackburn suffered injuries to his spine, spleen, and lungs. He is hospitalized at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.
Moore has been charged with intoxication assault and causing serious bodily injury to an officer.
Commentary
The driver who caused this wreck already has two criminal counts pending against her; however, she could also face a civil lawsuit brought by the victim or his insurance company. In regard to this incident, we will offer more information as it becomes available.
