NOLAN COUNTY, TX (09/12/2016) — Two Seminole teenagers were killed on Monday morning after the driver of an 18-wheeler veered into oncoming lanes of traffic on I-20 and caused a five-vehicle accident.
According to officials, 17-year-old Lydia Fehr Penner and 17-year-old Steven Lee Wiebe (both of Seminole) have been identified as the two victims of a fatal car accident which occurred on Interstate 20, near mile marker 251.
The DPS crash report indicates that at around 9:40 a.m., an 18-wheeler hauling a flatbed trailer was traveling westbound on I-20 when the big rig veered into the center median and through the cable system. The truck entered the eastbound lanes of IH-20 and struck a total of three vehicles. Two additional vehicles sustained were struck by debris.
Steven Wiebe was taken to Rolling-Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater, where he later died. Lydia Penner was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident. 37-year-old Bernhard “Benni” Peters (of Lamesa) was transported via air ambulance (CareFlite) to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene for treatment of head injuries and a broken leg. Three others also suffered injuries and were transported to area hospitals.
According to reports, Penner and Wiebe were traveling in a Ford Excursion with four others (all from Christian Aid Ministries of Seminole) on a mission trip Louisiana in order to help clean-up damage from recent historic floods when the accident occurred.
