BALLINGER, TX (10/21/2016) — A wrong-way accident on Friday night claimed the life of Summer Hernandez, and left three adults and one child injured.
According to Sergeant Justin Baker with the Texas Highway Patrol, 24-year-old Summer Newton Hernandez (of Ballinger) was killed in a wrong-way accident on Highway 83, which also injured 25-year-old Eddie Clint Johnson Jr. (of Ballinger), 28-year-old Kristen Marie Dennis (of Mertzon), and Dennis’ 3-year-old passenger.
Authorities reported that at around 8:00 p.m., 60-year-old Rosendo F. Ovalles was traveling southbound in a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu when he attempted to pass other vehicles by using the northbound lane.
During this maneuver, Ovalles collided with a 2000 Toyota 4Runner, driven by Johnson. After the initial impact, Johnson’s vehicle subsequently moved into the southbound lanes and crashed into a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse, driven by Dennis.
Hernandez, who was a passenger in the 4Runner, lost her life in the wreckage. Johnson was transported to Shannon Medical Center with serious, incapacitating injuries.
Dennis, along with her 3-year-old child, were also taken to Shannon Medical Center. They have since been treated and released. Ovalles was reportedly uninjured.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is currently investigating this accident.
