CALDWELL, TX (10/22/2016) — Brandon Mackens tragically lost his life after a single-vehicle car accident on Saturday.
Officials identified 15-year-old Brandon Mackens (of North Zulch) as the victim of a fatal accident that occurred at the intersection of Texas 21 (Presidential Corridor E) and County Road 300 in Caldwell, Texas early Saturday.
Authorities reported that Mackens was a passenger in 17-year-old Heston Lee Helton’s pickup truck, which was traveling westbound on Texas 21 while pulling a full-sized SUV on a 35-foot trailer. According to Caldwell Police Chief Charles Barnes, Helton locked up the brakes and swerved into the left turn lane to avoid a collision with a vehicle stopped at a red light. However, he lost control of the truck and struck a light pole. The collision resulted in the trailer becoming disconnected and crashing into the rear of the pickup truck.
Mackens did not survive the wreckage. Helton was transported to CHI St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan, Texas. His current condition is unknown.
An investigation is ongoing.
