MIDLAND, TX (01/14/2017) — A head-on collision killed Kantrell Hires and his three teenage passengers on Saturday morning.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) identified the victims from a two-vehicle accident on State Highway 158 in Midland, Texas as:
- 36-year-old Petty Officer First Class Kantrell D. Hires
- 16-year-old Kristen Hires
- 14-year-old Kaleb Hires
- 11-year-old Alexander Hires
DPS officials reported that at around 6:30 a.m., 25-year-old Luis Rangel, Jr. was traveling eastbound on SH 158 in a 2007 Ford F-150 pickup truck when he hydroplaned, veered into the westbound lanes, and struck a 2004 Chevrolet Impala—driven by Hires—head on.
Hires along with his three passengers—all from Portland, Texas—were pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. The three young victims were children of Kantrell Hires.
Rangel was taken to Midland Memorial Hospital for treatment on non-incapacitating injures.
An investigation is ongoing.
