LEONARD, TX (02/18/2017) — A mother and daughter, Katara Davis and Katherine Davis, were killed in a head-on collision on Saturday night.
Police identified the two victims from an accident that occurred on Highway 69 near County Road 5070 in Leonard, Texas as: 58-year-old Katherine Davis and her daughter, 28-year-old Katara Davis (both of Greenville).
Officials reported that at around 10:00 p.m., Samuel Davis (who is not related to the victims) was traveling northbound in a pickup truck when he crossed into southbound traffic and collided with a passenger car head-on.
After the initial impact, both vehicles became engulfed in flames.
“We were wanting to work as quickly as possible to get the flames extinguished,” Leonard firefighter Tyler McCarley said at the scene. “We were hoping that there was a chance that we could have saved even one of them.”
The two occupants of the car were Katherine and Katara Davis. They were killed in the wreckage. Samuel Davis also died in the collision.
First responders reported that a third vehicle also struck the wreckage after the initial collision. The two occupants of the third car were transported to an area hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.
Police are conducting an investigation.

Investigators are working to determine what may have caused the at-fault driver to veer into oncoming lanes of traffic.
