DONLEY COUNTY, TX (05/13/2017) — 12-year-old Allison Monroe was killed, and two others were critically injured after a fiery rear-end collision on US-287 Saturday evening.
According to DPS officials, the two-vehicle accident occurred in the eastbound lanes of US-287 at around 6:00 p.m. Saturday in Donley County, about a mile west of Hedley, Texas.
43-year-old Katherine Monroe (of Hedley) was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier eastbound on US-287, when she slowed to turn left at a crossover. 34-year-old Erika Roberts (of Amarillo) was driving a 2016 Jeep Renegade directly behind Monroe when troopers say she failed to control her vehicle and collided with the rear of Monroe’s Cavalier. Following the collision, the Jeep Renegade caught fire.
Monroe’s rear seat passenger, 12-year-old Allison Monroe (also of Hedley), was tragically killed as a result of the collision and was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash by Donley County Justice of the Peace Pam Mason.
Katherine Monroe and her 10-year-old female front seat passenger (who was from Anson) were transported by air ambulance to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Erika Roberts was reportedly uninjured.
Commentary
The Department of Public Safety reported that all parties involved in this crash were wearing seat belts, and that conditions were dry at the time of collision. This tragic accident may simply be the result of following too closely or distracted driving, but we will not likely have an answer until DPS concludes their investigation. We will update this story as more information is released.
