HOUSTON, TX (05/21/2016) — DBi Services worker Alvaro Rubio Covarrubias died in a construction accident early Saturday morning.
Police have identified 48-year-old Alvaro Rubio Covarrubias as the road worker killed in a fatal highway accident that occurred on Interstate 10 in Houston, Texas.
According to authorities, at around midnight, a worker crew was repairing a concrete wall along I-10 near Sam Houston Parkway when Brandon Watkins—who was traveling in a Cadillac—hit one of the orange barrels in the construction zone and collided with a concrete mixer and Covarrubias.
Alvaro Covarrubias lost his life in the wreckage.
Officials reported that Watkins showed signs of intoxication, however, he was under the legal BAC limit. They are now checking to see if he was under the influence of narcotics at the time of the accident.
Commentary
The results of the investigation will determine what kind of charges this driver will likely face. However, regardless of whether or not drugs were a factor, he could still face a civil lawsuit from the victim’s family. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
