AMARILLO, TX (09/08/2015) — Officer Justin Scherlen remains in critical condition following a serious head-on collision that occurred Tuesday morning.
According to the Amarillo Police Department (APD), Officer Justin Scherlen is in critical condition after head-on car accident on Tuesday morning along 34th Street in Amarillo, Texas.
Authorities state that at around 6:40 a.m., Officer Scherlen was responding to a routine call when the driver of a Jeep Wrangler crossed into his lane and struck his marked patrol car head-on.
Officer Scherlen was transported to Northwest Texas Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He underwent surgery and was last reported to be in the Intensive Care Unit.
According to police, Officer Scherlen suffered a broken femur, a broken kneecap, and a shattered pelvis.
“He is not out of the woods yet, and it is the first of evidently several surgeries,” Amarillo Police Cpl. Sean Slover said in his interview with the Amarillo Globe. “The next 72 hours will tell them a lot. Everybody is rooting for him.”
The APD Traffic Investigations Unit is currently investigating this wreck.
