ARLINGTON, TX (10/19/2017) — Arlington police report that a 23-year-old drunk driver caused an accident on Interstate 20 early Thursday morning which killed a mother of six.
The fatal accident occurred at around 12:30 a.m. in the 4300 block of Interstate 20. Investigators say that 42-year-old Asheta Goins-Holbrook (of Arlington) had parked on the shoulder of I-20 in order to assist her sister, who’s vehicle was disabled.
While Goins-Holbrook was outside her vehicle, an eastbound pickup truck driven by 23-year-old Austin Churkey veered off the road, onto the shoulder, and struck both vehicles at speed.
“We actually had someone call in to report a reckless driver and while that caller was reporting this information to our 911 dispatch, the caller observed the car accident,” reported Arlington Police Sgt. Vanessa Harrison.
As a result of the crash, Asheta Goins-Holbrook was pinned between the two parked vehicles. Goins-Holbrook was transported to Medical City Arlington, but was pronounced deceased at 1:19 a.m.
Churkey, who police note had a prior DWI conviction in 2015, was arrested at the scene and charged with intoxication manslaughter. His bond was set at only $10,000, and it was reported that he has already bonded out of jail.
