HUNTSVILLE, TX (08/15/2016) — A multi-vehicle collision on Monday afternoon claimed the lives of Cheehee Kang and Yero Lee, and left Juny Lee injured.
Police have identified 43-year-old Cheehee Kang and 11-year-old Yero Lee as the victims of a fatal rear-end accident that occurred along Interstate 45 in Huntsville, Texas.
According to Sgt. Steven McNeil with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), at around 2:00 p.m., Juny Lee was driving a 2010 Toyota Corolla when he slowed down due to a two-vehicle accident ahead of him.
At that moment, the female driver of a 2005 GMC Envoy rear-ended the Corolla, killing both the back seat passengers: Cheehee Kang and Yero Lee.
“It appears the victims died on impact,” McNeil said Tuesday evening. “We are still trying to sort out what happened and what caused the Envoy to hit the Corolla from behind.”
Three other vehicles were involved in this collision, however, those drivers have not been identified.
Juny Lee suffered minor injuries and was taken to Huntsville Memorial Hospital for treatment; he has since been released.
“We are still trying to piece this together,” McNeil added. “All we know is that the Corolla was slowing down for another traffic accident and was struck from behind by the Envoy. It happened so quickly that none of the other drivers remember who hit who after that.”
An investigation is ongoing.
Commentary
The DPS is still investigating this fatal accident, therefore, details are limited. We do suspect that the driver who spurred on this collision might be held criminally and civilly liable for this incident, since rear-ended accidents are typically the fault of the driver who struck the other vehicle from behind.
