SPICEWOOD, TX (11/28/2016) — A Monday morning chain-reaction accident claimed the lives of Cynthia and Santiago Vega.
Police have identified 17-year-old Santiago Vega—a senior at Lake Travis High School—and his mother, 46-year-old Cynthia Vega, as the victims of a fatal accident that occurred near the intersection of Highway 71 and Fall Creek Estates Drive in Spicewood, Texas.
Department of Public Safety (DPS) Sergeant Robbie Barrera reported that at around 8:20 a.m., a westbound Subaru veered into oncoming traffic, crashing into a four-door Ford Focus. The DPS says that the Subaru “failed to negotiate a curve and entered the inside lane of SH 71.” After the initial accident, an 18-wheeler truck also collided with the disabled Ford Focus, causing it to flip onto its passenger side.
The driver of the Focus (Cynthia Vega) and her son (Santiago Vega) were pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger in the Focus, 50-year-old Justino Rodriguez (of Marble Falls), was transported to University Medical Center at Brackenridge with serious injuries, as was the driver of the Subaru.
According to reports, several motorists called 911 just prior to the crash to report a Subaru on Highway 71 that was “speeding and driving erratically.”
This accident remains under investigation.
