HOUSTON, TX (01/28/2017) — A drunk driver caused an accident which claimed the life of Daly Sutton and injured his wife Genise Sutton on Saturday morning.
According to authorities, 53-year-old driver Genise Sutton was injured and her husband, 53-year-old Daly Sutton, was killed in a drunk driving accident on the Interstate 45 (North Freeway) feeder road at Rankin Road in Houston, Texas.
Police reported that at around 12:15 a.m., 45-year-old Jose Juan Flores was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed in Chevrolet Corvette when he rear-ended a Kia Soul with handicapped plates, driven by Genise Sutton. The impact caused Kia to leave the roadway and collide with a concrete wall.
Genise was taken to Ben Taub Hospital with serious bodily injuries. Her front seat passenger and spouse, Daly Sutton, died at the scene.
According to the Sherriff’s office, Flores emerged from his car unhurt after the collision and walked to a nearby gas station. Other drivers who observed the wreck stayed with the victims until police arrived.
Officers suspected that Flores had been drinking and obtained a blood-draw warrant. Flores was then arrested and subsequently charged with intoxication manslaughter. He is scheduled to appear before a judge Monday morning.
An investigation is ongoing.
Commentary
Our hearts go out to those affected by this tragic accident. Unfortunately, about one in three traffic deaths in the United States involve a drunk driver, and Texas ranks among the 10 states that have done the least to prevent alcohol-related traffic fatalities. While strides have been made, until our state begins implementing more preventative measures, we’re likely to continue down the same path we’re on.
