DALLAS, TX (11/10/2015) — An unidentified man was killed after a DART bus struck him early Tuesday morning.
According to authorities, a 24-year-old man—who has not yet been identified—was killed after a Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) bus struck him along Interstate-35E near Inwood Road in Dallas, Texas.
The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office reported that at around 5:00 a.m., the driver of a pickup truck lost control of his vehicle after one of the truck’s axles broke. He pulled over with the help of two Good Samaritans who used flashlights to motion other drivers around the scene.
An approaching 18-wheeler didn’t notice the scene until very late and swerved to avoid causing a collision. However, a DART bus traveling behind the 18-wheeler was unable to avoid striking the pickup truck.
The two Good Samaritans were able to get out of the way in time, but the 24-year-old driver of the pickup truck was not able to do the same. He was struck and killed at the scene.
“Unfortunately, it still costed him his life,” Marcus Dennis, one the Good Samaritans, said. “I would like for his family to know that he was more worried of others than himself.”
Names have not been released, and no charges have been filed. This fatal wreck remains under investigation.
Commentary
Was there nothing the bus driver could have done to avoid the collision? Did the 18-wheeler and the bus both maintain a safe following distance from the vehicles in front of them? Perhaps the collision was unavoidable; we’d only be speculating at this point. I hope for the victim’ sake that a full and thorough investigation is conducted. Luckily, the DART bus was likely equipped with a video camera, and the accident was also likely caught by a highway traffic camera.
