Intoxicated Santiago Gonzalez, age 21, drove the wrong-way down I-35 at 7:30 am yesterday. He caused a four-car pileup where one innocent driver, Maria Vasquez was killed. The accident had I-35E closed for more than three hours on Father’s Day as the scene was cleared. Gonzalez has since been arrested for intoxicated assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury and intoxicated manslaughter with a vehicle. Since Gonzalez is in the country illegally, he is being held by U. S. Immigration. At this stage, it’s not clear what the legal ramifications will be for Gonzalez now that Immigration is involved.
News outlet WFAA’s pictures of the vehicles after the accident are chilling. Vasquez’s car was crushed and she was stuck inside the vehicle for an hour while firefighters tried to free her from the warped vehicle. Emergency crews did get to her, but she died of her injuries in the hospital. Vasquez’s young son was nearly in the car with her, but thankfully she had left him with her parents moments before the accident.
