CHAPPELL HILL, TX (07/06/2017) — A Chappell Hill man was pronounced deceased at the scene of a crash after his pickup truck was struck by an 18-wheeler on Thursday.
Police were called to the scene of a major accident at the intersection of US Highway 290 and FM 1155 shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Thursday morning. According to DPS reports, 75-year-old Eddie Mayes (of Chappell Hill) was driving northbound on FM 1155 when his pickup truck was struck by a semi-truck travelling east on U.S. 290. As a result of the accident, Mayes’ pickup truck reportedly caught fire.
DPS Sargent Jimmy Morgan said that witnesses reported that the driver of the 2002 18-wheeler, 34-year-old Shane Campbell, ran a red light at the intersection, causing the fatal crash.
Tragically, Mayes was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Campbell was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Brenham, but reportedly suffered no serious injuries.
