CHAPPELL HILL, TX (07/06/2017) — A Chappell Hill man was pronounced deceased at the scene of a crash after his pickup truck was struck by an 18-wheeler on Thursday.
Police were called to the scene of a major accident at the intersection of US Highway 290 and FM 1155 shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Thursday morning. According to DPS reports, 75-year-old Eddie Mayes (of Chappell Hill) was driving northbound on FM 1155 when his pickup truck was struck by a semi-truck travelling east on U.S. 290. As a result of the accident, Mayes’ pickup truck reportedly caught fire.
DPS Sargent Jimmy Morgan said that witnesses reported that the driver of the 2002 18-wheeler, 34-year-old Shane Campbell, ran a red light at the intersection, causing the fatal crash.
Tragically, Mayes was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Campbell was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Brenham, but reportedly suffered no serious injuries.
According to reports, police have not yet issued any citations or levied charges. This is not necessarily uncommon at this point, and it’s important to understand that the investigation is still pending and police are likely still collecting and sorting through evidence.
