MIDLOTHIAN, TX (01/08/2016) — A police chase involving the suspect of a stolen van ended in a fatal car accident on Friday that claimed the life of an innocent driver, Garrett Tolliver.
According to authorities, 18-year-old Garrett Tolliver has been identified as the victim of a fatal, head-on collision that occurred along Highway 287 in Midlothian, Texas.
Police reported that at around 2:00 p.m., near Plainview and Walnut Grove roads, authorities were pursuing the driver of stolen van, which had been taken from an Academy Sports and Outdoors parking lot in Waxahachie, Texas about an hour before the pursuit began. A GPS signal from the van helped officers located the vehicle; it was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 287.
While fleeing police, the suspect drove the wrong way on Highway 287 (traveling northbound in the southbound lane) and crashed head-on into Tolliver’s pickup truck. After the initial impact, the van burst into flames.
Tolliver—who was visiting his mother and girlfriend after finishing work—died at the scene.
The suspect was also killed in the wreckage; their identity has not been released at this time.
