DENISON, TX (09/06/2015) — Lizette Lopez was struck a by a vehicle on Sunday afternoon while she was trying to perform an act of kindness.
According to Denison police, 20-year-old Lizette Lopez was killed on Sunday afternoon after she was struck by a vehicle along Texoma Parkway near Spur 503 in Denison, Texas. Lopez had just finished a shift at Nick’s Restaurant, and was on her way home, when the auto-pedestrian accident occurred.
Authorities state that 32-year-old Clyde Stanbery was traveling along Texoma Parkway when he struck Lopez, and failed to stop and render aid.
“She saw a turtle on the side of the road, and of course she has a big heart, so they pulled over, she got out of the car, and then she tried to move it and that when she got hit,” said Yuseth Johnson, a family member of Lopez.
Stanbery lost control of his car while fleeing the scene of the accident and crashed into a ditch near Spur 503.
According to police, Stanbery got out of his vehicle wielding a machete and headed toward the Creekmore Apartment Complex where he had an encounter with Jimmy Crieger, a resident.
“We took off, he busted the back glass out of my car, and went over there and told the cops and they took off running down through that way and got him over there between the two bridges,” Criger said.
Stanbery has been charged with manslaughter, intoxicated manslaughter, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, accident causing injury or death, and aggravated robbery and kidnapping (for his attempt to hijack someone’s car).
