TUSCOLA, TX (06/27/2015) — James C. Sheward, 33, was killed and James Edward Smith, 38, was injured in a near head-on crash caused by 28-year-old Nicholas Randell Barton.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has confirmed that 33-year-old James C. Sheward, of Kyle, has died following a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 84 in Taylor County, south of Abilene, on Saturday afternoon.
DPS officials have stated that at around 3:45 p.m., 28-year-old Nicholas Randell Barton was driving a 2011 Ford pickup northbound on U.S. 84, an estimated three miles southeast of Tuscola, Texas. Barton crossed into southbound traffic and struck a 2011 Honda sedan, nearly head-on, driven by 38-year-old James Edward Smith.
James Smith was transported to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene for treatment, and has since been released. James Sheward, Smith’s passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Sparky Dean.
According to the DPS, Barton was uninjured in the wreckage. All three men were reportedly wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
This accident remains under investigation.
