Balch Springs, Texas — A dump truck carrying a load of sand caused a fatal accident on Interstate 635 after crossing into oncoming traffic on Friday (02/14/2014) at around noon.
Two people are dead following the wrong way accident, which occurred on the southbound side of LBJ near the Elam Road exit. Tire skid marks on the highway indicate that the driver of the dump truck crossed from the northbound lanes, through the barriers in the median, and struck two vehicles head-on in the southbound lanes of traffic. The dump truck and its trailer rolled over onto its side, spilling sand all over the highway and igniting a small grass fire.
Jesus Rivaz, of Dallas, was driving a pickup truck southbound on Interstate 635 when he was struck and killed by the sand hauler. Rivaz was a popular business owner (he owned Del Norte Bakery in East Dallas) and devout family man. Sadly, Mr. Rivas had just celebrated his birthday this week.
The driver of the dump truck also died in the accident. His name has not yet been released to the public.
