BALCH SPRINGS, TX (7/20/2014) — One woman was killed, and five others remained hospitalized after a suspected drunk driver caused an accident on LBJ Freeway Sunday night.
According to witness reports, a female driver in a white car was headed north on LBJ Freeway (Interstate 635) just north of Highway 175 when she cut off a Chevy Silverado pickup truck causing it to spin out, crash, and flip over onto its roof just before 11:00 p.m. The white car also went spinning into a guardrail.
Police discovered six people inside the overturned pickup truck: 30-year-old Juliana Reynoso, 33-year-old Juan Pedrosa, 33-year Mayra Garcia, a 2-year-old boy, a 3-month-old girl and another one-month-old girl. Juliana Reynoso was taken by air ambulance (CareFlite) to Parkland Memorial Hospital in critical condition, but she later died. All five other occupants of the truck remain hospitalized.
The driver of the white car has been identified as 40-year-old Taneka Keichon Birdwell. She was the lone occupant of the vehicle and was not injured. Birdwell failed a field sobriety test and has been charged with intoxication manslaughter.
