ESCOBARES, TX (06/12/2016) — A Sunday night accident involving a suspected drunk driver claimed the lives of Maria Garcia and Elena Cantu.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), 45-year-old Maria Zulema Garcia and 75-year-old Elena Lopez Cantu died in a three-vehicle accident that occurred on Highway 83 near San Julian Road in Roma, Texas.
The DPS report stated that shortly before 6:00 p.m., the driver of an eastbound Chevrolet Tahoe veered across the median into the westbound lanes and struck a Ford Crown Victoria.
After the initial accident, a Ford F-150 collided with the two wrecked vehicles.
The two passengers of the Crown Victoria, Garcia and Cantu, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Crown Victoria and the driver of the Tahoe were taken to McAllen Medical Center for treatment.
The DPS believes alcohol may have been a factor in this accident.
Commentary
If alcohol is found to be a factor in this wreck, the driver who caused the accident could face two counts of intoxication manslaughter and at least one count of intoxication assault (in addition to any civil claims filed by the victims’ families). Police are still investigating the accident, but we will provide more information as it becomes available.
