ARLINGTON, TX (12/29/2014) — A woman was killed and two others were injured following an accident involving an intoxicated driver on Monday afternoon.
According to reports, 43-year-old Maria Mendoza-Deguzman, of Mansfield, was exiting a Taco Cabana parking lot in the 4300 block of Little Road at about 5:30 p.m. when her vehicle was struck by a northbound pickup truck. According to Arlington police spokesman Lt. Chris Cook, Mendoza-Deguzman was attempting to cross the northbound lanes of Little Road in order to reach another nearby business. As Mendoza-Deguzman entered Little Road, her car was struck. The collision “caused her car to spin and strike a light pole,” according to Lt. Cook.
Maria Mendoza de Guzman and her passenger, a male child of about 11 or 12 years old, were injured in the car accident. Mendoza-Deguzman was transported to Medical Center of Arlington where she was pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m. The boy was also hospitalized with injuries that are said to be non-life-threatening. The driver of the pickup truck, a man in his 50s, was also transported to an area hospital with unknown injuries.
While police are still investigating the accident to determine the cause of the crash, they do say the driver is expected to face charges of driving while intoxicated. Police may later decide to upgrade charges to intoxication manslaughter and/or intoxication assault.
