BELLS, TX (03/26/2016) — Mason Yeary remains in serious condition after his car was struck by a drunk driver on Saturday afternoon.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) identified 19-year-old Mason Yeary as the victim of drunk driving accident that occurred at the intersection of Highway 82 and Craft Road in Bells, Texas.
DPS Troopers reported that at around 4:30 p.m., Joseph May was driving a Ford pickup truck westbound on 82, and attempted to turn south onto Craft Rd. May failed to yield the right of way to an eastbound passenger vehicle on Highway 82, causing a serious accident.
Mason Yeary was flown to a Plano-area hospital in serious condition. His family reported that he is making improvements, but his condition remains unchanged.
May was arrested and charged with intoxication assault.
This accident remains under investigation.
Google StreetView images do not appear to show anything which may have obstructed the driver’s view, so one has to assume that the driver who caused this accident more than likely failed to check for oncoming traffic before crossing the eastbound lanes of the highway. I wish I could say that I was surprised that the driver was found to be under the influence, but Texas (unfortunately) leads the nation in drunk driving fatalities. We’re thankful no one was killed in this accident, and hope for a speedy recovery.
