HOUSTON, TX (01/11/2017) — Michael Unfried was killed in a preventable accident on Wednesday after being struck by a Metro bus near downtown Houston.
According to Houston police, 36-year-old Michael Kenneth Unfried (of Pasadena) was killed in a bus accident that occurred at the intersection of Congress Avenue and Milam Street in Houston, Texas.
Authorities reported that at around 6:00 p.m., Vickie Sadler was driving the Metro bus when she attempted to turn left from Congress onto Milam Street. As she made the turn, the bus struck Unfried, who was believed to be in the crosswalk.
“They just said he was in a crosswalk, that he had the go-ahead, and a bus was turning and didn’t see him,” said Ken Unfried, the victim’s father.
Metro CEO Tom Lambert stated that this accident was likely preventable.
“As CEO, I want the public to know our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family,” Lambert said. “We have been and will continue to stress safe driving practices for our operators. We are also doubling up our efforts to push the pedestrian safety message to the public and our employees.”
An investigation is underway.
