Carrollton, Texas — A Thursday morning (12/26/2013) car accident has sent Obed Rodriguez-Govea and one other to the hospital with extensive injuries.
Carrollton police say that 18-year-old Obed Rodriguez-Govea was intoxicated when he caused an accident in the 1800 block of Denton Drive (near Interstate 35-E). Rodriguez-Govea was driving with three of his teenage friends in a 2002 Honda Accord when he smashed into a utility pole at around 3:50 a.m.
Obed Rodriguez-Govea and another passenger were taken to the Medical Center of Plano. Carrollton police conducted a blood test on the driver, and have charged Mr. Rodriguez-Govea with two counts of intoxication assault.
Texas alone had 776 DWI-related traffic accidents & 70 fatalities during 2012’s holiday season — a more than 20% increase from 2011. The fact that this man was 18 years old also concerns me because that means someone furnished the alcohol to him. Because of our state’s high drunk driving accident numbers, Texas has passed several laws aimed at punishing (both criminally and civilly) those who serve alcohol or make it available to minors. Let’s hope that the provider of the alcohol shares in the responsibility for this accident and the hospital bills that come with it.
