Sgt. Cynthia Blake, supervisor of the traffic investigation unit stated that Hernandez was returning a store shopping cart while his family waited in their vehicle.
While Blake says that the child ran in front of the pickup truck without looking, giving the driver no time to stop; his mother, Daniela Hernandez, stated that the driver was traveling too fast in the parking lot. “He said he was driving 10 miles an hour. He was going faster,” said Hernandez. “My husband even honked for him to stop and he didn’t react… He honked like five times prior to him hitting my son.”
Orlando Hernandez was struck by the pickup truck and transported to Cook Children’s Medical Center, where he died from his injuries sustained in the accident.
While the boy’s mother believes that criminal charges should be pursued, Sgt. Cynthia Blake stated that no criminal charges are currently pending against the driver.
According to district officials, Hernandez had just completed the third grade at Rosemont Park Elementary School.
