Just before midnight last night on Marsalis Avenue a pedestrian was not only struck by a car, but dragged for yards by the vehicle. The man, whose name has not yet been released, died at the scene. The driver may have initially stopped, but ultimately left the scene before the ambulance and squad cars arrived. Now the police are busy searching for witnesses who saw the pedestrian killed or who has any information related to the hit-and-run.
The police do have a suspect, and he is already in custody but on charges relating to a different crime. He might soon be facing charges for the fatal accident in addition to the trouble he is already in. Right now the suspect’s name and the name of his unfortunate victim are being withheld from the public by the police.
Walking at night can be dangerous due to low visibility. Be cautious when walking on summer nights after the sun has gone down. It may not have been entirely the driver’s fault for not seeing the other man, but because he chose to leave the scene of the accident he must be held responsible at a criminal level for his part in the gruesome dragging death.
