MANVEL, TX (08/18/2015) – Madison High School student Imani Richard was killed after a two-vehicle crash along Highway 288 on Tuesday night.
According to authorities, 17-year-old Imani Richard was killed, and five others were injured, in a two-vehicle accident on Highway 288 at Croix Road in Manvel, Texas on Tuesday evening.
Police state that at around 7:20 p.m., Imani Richard and five friends were traveling to the beach in Pontiac when they began to experience car trouble and decided to head home. The Pontiac stalled and stopped running in a moving lane. Police say that the driver might have been confused by the single stripe on the roadway.
“There’s all kinds of indications that make it look like that could be an improved emergency shoulder, when it’s actually a moving lane of traffic.” said Manvel Police Chief Keith Traylor.
According to police, a passenger car behind them managed to swerve and miss the Pontiac; however, a Subaru behind that car wasn’t able to stop in time and rear-ended the Pontiac.
Officers believe that Richard was sitting on a friend’s lap in the back seat and become pinned inside the wrecked vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Houston Independent School District spokeswoman told Eyewitness News she was about to enter the 11th grade at Madison High.
